4 day Workshop on Project Management (PMI)
(April 15 to 18 – 2006 Ramada Hotel - Dubai)

The workshop is based on PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) of PMI (Project Management Institute), U.S.A. - Facilitating Preparation for PMP® Examination as per third edition of PMBOK (2005)

This program is designed to expose the participants to an integrated approach to Project Management. It is designed to develop the basic knowledge needed to manage projects effectively and is a first step toward PMP certification. Comprehensive sections including sample questions on each knowledge area and planning processes are covered. There will be also discussions on other matters of PMP exam, assignments and plan for post course studies for PMP.

Workshop Objectives


Establish a common vocabulary and understanding of basic Project Management terms and concepts such as PMBOK, project, project management, operations, programs, stakeholders, earned value, scheduling techniques, and project manager’s responsibilities and competencies.

Describe the purpose, inputs, and outputs of the core processes in each of the five Process Groups: Initiating, Planning, Controlling, Execution and Closing.

Define the 9 Project Management Knowledge areas & the processes in each. Define & explain the relationship of Process groups, knowledge areas, project phases, project & product Life Cycle.

Understand the PM tools and techniques like Project Charter, Scope Statement, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Responsibility Matrix, Planning, Scheduling, Network Building, CPM, Bar /Gantt Chart. Brief insights to MSP mapping the various processes.

Demonstrate a clear understanding of what activities, tools, & techniques, are necessary in each phase of a project & understand the PMP examination nuances.

Understand, acknowledge & appreciate importance of risk management. Learn tools and techniques for managing the risks in projects.

Help the participants to understand one’s abilities, understand others, and manage the interface more efficiently & effectively. Understanding the impact of organizational structures on projects.

With the help of case studies, motivating the participants to use the principles of Project Management in their own work area discussed with the help of case studies.

Program Outline

  • Overview of Project Management: Introduction and Key Concepts in PM. Reasons why PM is needed Differences between Projects & Operations Trends in PM List Project Success & Failure. Overview of PMBOK. Project Structures, Project Life Cycle Models. Sample test paper of PMP examination. Project management process groups. Initiating Process.
  • Project management Process groups: Planning Process, Executing Process, Controlling Process, and Closing Process. Understanding processes in each process group and mapping it to the relevant knowledge area. Comprehensive sections including sample questions on each knowledge area and planning processes are covere.
  • Introduction to concepts of Risk Management. Impact of organizational ‘risk nature’ type on the overall performance of Project management while analyzing and managing the risk(s). Risk identification, different types of risks, classification of risks (category-wise, priority-wise), risk statement / context, analysis of risks, risk impact and consequences, risk mitigation plans, risk consequence / loss. Why continuous RM, costs of RM, risk reporting and information sheet, risk control, planning and prevention. Case Studies and examples of mitigation of risks.
  • Organizational Impact: Approaches in Org Structure and its impact Functional v/s. Matrix v/s. Project Based Structure. Understand determinants of behavior, self-image & self-effectiveness, interpersonal skills, conflict management, teamwork, influencing self & others, leadership skills.
  • Revision of PMBOK through Knowledge Area perspective. Discussion on 9 knowledge areas. Project Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, HR, Risk, Communication, Procurement, Integration Management. Discussions on other matters of PMP examination. Assignments, homework and plan for post course studies for PMP. Sample test paper.

Who should attend

We recommend that participants have project management background or at least have worked in project environment with at least 3.5 to 4 years of experience.
